It’s days like this when it’s hard to put into words the magic that happens at a Sing For Your Seniors session. It was beautiful to watch the seniors in memory care at 305 West End come alive and remember these songs from their youth.
I started us off with “The Sound of Music.” As the music started, two seniors immediately burst into song with me! They sat up in their chairs, swaying with the music, remembering every single lyric.
Beth followed with “Cockeyed Optimist” and lo and behold, those same two seniors joined her in that song as well! During Sarah’s “Someone’s Been Sending Me Flowers,” she moved close to our seniors to sing directly to them and they gasped in delight.
Earlier in the day our seniors had a Wizard of Oz themed celebration, so I had to sing “Over the Rainbow.” During this song, the entire audience sang along. Beth followed with “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and you guessed it, the whole group of seniors sang along with her. Sarah then sang “I’m in Love With a Wonderful Guy.” She sang the intro of the song that isn’t as well known, but when she got into the chorus, our two Rodgers and Hammerstein’s seniors knew this tune, too!
During the session one of the residents wanted to move around, so one of the staff members danced with her while we sang – it was a lovely moment to witness. We can’t wait to be back at 305 next month!
